When you think about needing legal services or needing an attorney, what comes to mind? I know my first thought is “expensive.” Most attorneys charge retainers of $1,000.00 or more and they bill their time at $200.00 an hour or more. Depending on the type of case, there are ways to minimize the cost.
Pro bono attorneys will assist you for free, however, they are hard to find and only accept certain types of cases. You would need to check with your local Bar Association to find a list of pro bono attorneys and the types of cases they accept.
Some employers will offer “prepaid legal services.” These are essentially discounts on legal services if you retain or contact certain attorneys or law firms. Frequently these involve a free 30 minute consultation and then a discount on their hourly rate or retainer if they accept your case.
In some cases, you can retain an attorney to manage only a piece of your case for a flat fee, but this can get expensive. You also run the risk that you will miss something as you would represent yourself in the main case and could easily miss something.
You can, of course, represent yourself and avoid the expense of retaining an attorney. This, however, comes with many risks.
Another option is a membership program, such as WayBeyond Rewards. WayBeyond Rewards offers legal services performed within 24 hours by experienced local lawyers starting at $39.99. These services can range anywhere from general advice to document review or uncontested divorces. The nice thing about WayBeyond Rewards is that they offer rebates, discounts, and coupons on everything from utilities and childcare to eating out and traveling for only $24.99 a month. You can check them out at https://waybeyondclub.com/
Just a few options to consider when thinking legal services. Hopefully, this helps you in your search to save money.
